How Many Wedding Guest Portraits Can Be Painted at One Event? (A Realistic Guide)

How Many Wedding Guest Portraits Can Be Painted at a Wedding?

One of the most common questions couples ask when considering live wedding guest portraits is:

“How many guests can realistically be painted during the wedding?”

The answer depends on several factors, including the number of hours booked, the style of portrait, how the artist works and the flow of the event.

As a live wedding artist in the UK, I typically paint between 6 and 8 guests per hour, as my work is based on quality over quantity.

How Long Does Each Guest Portrait Take?

A typical live wedding guest portrait takes approximately:

8–12 minutes per person

This allows the artist to capture key features and outfit details while keeping the process efficient, so more guests can be painted during the event.

Because the portraits are painted live, guests also get the added entertainment of watching the artwork come to life in real time.

How Many Guests Can Be Painted During a Wedding?

Personally, i do not give an exact quote on how many guests i can paint as i quote based on paintings rather than guests. For example:

Bronze 4 hours = 20 paintings

Silver 6 hours = 30 paintings

Gold 8 hours = 40 paintings

Each of those paintings can include between 1-4 guests, depending on how guests prefer to have their paintings done as individuals, couples and families etc.

What Happens If There Are More Guests?

For larger weddings, couples usually choose one of these options:

Focus on Smaller Groups

Painting couples or small groups allows more guests to be included in each portrait.

Priority Guest List

Some couples request portraits for close family members or the bridal party first.

Studio Completion

Any remaining portraits can be completed after the wedding in the artist’s studio, depending on the package.

When Are Guest Portraits Painted During the Wedding?

Live wedding painting works best during these parts of the day:

  • Drinks reception

  • Cocktail hour

  • Wedding breakfast

  • Early evening reception

These moments allow guests to enjoy the experience while still keeping the day flowing naturally.

Why Guests Love Live Wedding Portraits

Couples often tell me that guest portraits became one of the most talked-about part of their wedding.

Guests love them because:

  • they receive a personalised keepsake

  • they enjoy watching the artist paint

  • they have a unique memory from the wedding

Unlike traditional wedding favours, a hand-painted portrait is something people actually keep and display.
